About Underfoot

Welcome to Underfoot, a blog assembled from interesting stories in the geosciences, environmental history, and human culture. I would like for this blog to be an interdisciplinary contribution to the existing geo-blogging community, a forum to explore geological issues from some unexpected angles. The physics of tectonic movement are fascinating, but what if we also discuss the ways in which orogonies, faults, trenches, and cratons have affected our ecosystems, economies, and imaginations?

I try to publish fairly regularly on salient geological issues as they appear in the news and in scientific research. I also review literature (generally non-academic, fiction or non-fiction) that contains some geological elements (e.g. Strong Motion,The Sky the Stars the Wilderness, Angle of Repose.) Finally, I like to write a bit about the interesting narratives that I have experienced firsthand, from my work at an environmental research station in Namibia to the local geology of my current hometown, Washington D.C.

For all my love of the subject, I am not a formally trained geologist, so please forgive any awkward explanations of the hard science. I welcome the feedback and corrections of any expert geoscientists- it makes the blog into a better forum!

Please enjoy the posts, feel free to contribute, and get outside to experience the earth sciences under your own two feet.
